Dental Marketing Social Media
We often judge other people's behavior by our own. But in marketing that is sometimes a mistake. The rise of dental marketing social media is an example.
You may not participate in social media, but the rest of the world does.
And your next patients might.
When we think of getting patients from the web, we think Google. But as we said, Google is where people only spend 1% of their online time. It's as if we were advertising a travel destination by just hanging out at the airport. Where we want to hang out is where patients are spending their time.
And where is that?
Social media.
Social media is Facebook. It's Myspace. It's LinkedIn.
It's also a number of sites with silly names you may not have heard of. StumbleUpon. Digg. Reddit. Zimbio. Xanga. I could go on and on.
What are social media sites? They're places where people go to do what people love to do — communicate.
Broadly, there are maybe three types of social media sites.
The first type are communities. Myspace and Facebook are great examples. They encourage people to open accounts and move in, just so they can commune with other like-minded people. Don't think it's just college kids either. There are a lot of folks of different ages on these community sites, although it does skew to younger people.
The second type are social media sites of a special type, called social bookmarking sites. These are sites where people go to find other sites and news stories and share their discoveries. Digg is the huge success here but there are a number of others that are quite successful. For instance one caters only to clinical researchers sharing web pages and papers and links about their research. StumbleUpon is a type of social bookmarking system also, and very successful.
The third type are blog type sites. Although community and social bookmarketing sites often feature blogs, the blog type sites are specialized to allow people to keep their blogs and talk to each other. Zimbio, Wordpress.com, Xanga, ExperienceProject, the list goes on and on. There are a lot of the blog type sites.
All these social media sites share some common features.
They attract massive traffic.
They make it easy to share real discoveries — so if someone finds you they can spread the word about you to others on the site.
They are free to users.
They do not allow spam. That is, they do not allow you to create content solely to get patients or get business.
But they are a great source of patients nonetheless.
